A heavenly House on Sri Lanka's secret Mawella beach. Big, beautiful, comfortable, family house with a pool on the best undeveloped beach in Sri Lanka.
The furniture is a mix of state of the art - a vast stainless steel chandelier and barbecue - and genuine eclectic antiques. The Burmese teak floors in the two biggest downstairs bedrooms, the study and sitting room are recycled from a defunct ballroom in Nuwara Eliya, and the walkway has pillars from a collapsed South Indian temple. Dutch and old Brit antique chests and planters' chairs sit side by side with modern white sofas and Chinese cabinets. There are Sri Lankan and other pictures everywhere.
It grew to 85OO square feet on two floors of covered space. The house is well-equipped for families and is very child-friendly: there are a trio of gardens – including the palm-shaded lawn to the front – a swimming pool that can easily be watched over from the terrace, as well as plenty of board games, DVDs, cricket bats, a croquet set, badminton net and footballs. Nandi and the staff are also very good childminders. All of the bedrooms and living areas (side from the air conditioned TV den) are fan-cooled, but this seemed to be enough since breezes quite freely infiltrate the rooms through high vents and louvered doors.
