The bungalow consists of three spacious bedrooms with attached baths, a living room, a dining room, front and back verandahs, staff accommodation facilities and a resident cook and caretaker. Furnished in the original style with four-poster beds, almirahs, dressing tables and armchairs, the house can accommodate eight people comfortably.

Bungalow is situated amidst the tea gardens of the low country hills of Southern Sri Lanka, bordering the Sinharaja rainforest. Located approximately 130km from Colombo, travelling time by road takes around 2 hours on a combination of A and B roads and the Southern Expressway (using the Pinnaduwa Exit). If you travel light, you could take an Intercity bus or train to Galle, and thereafter a 13km ride by local bus or “tuk tuk” to the Bungalow.

Contemplation, thoughts, ideas, reflection and flashbacks – the tools of a writer – or the pleasures of a relaxing week or weekend, heighten at this estate bungalow set in the hills among the lush tea gardens.
Close to the historic city of Galle off the Wanduramba road, Nadun Uyana Estate straddles the hilly environs of Keembiya. The estate bungalow dates back to the 19th century.

Built by Mudaliyar E.R. Gooneratne, a typical scholar-official and land owner of the time, as his “writing retreat”, it witnessed the editing and translation of many Pali, Sanskrit and Sinhalese works. His translation of the Pali Text Society’s edition of the “Anguttara Nikaya” (The book of Gradual Sayings) and the “Rupamala” a Sanskrit manual for artists and craftsmen, were prepared here.

The house is a rare example of a classic, austere, mid-nineteenth century coffee plantation bungalow, now carefully restored, with additions to accommodate present day needs. Care has been taken to retain the original character of the bungalow, which could have been so easily lost in a makeover of the kind commonly applied to heritage buildings today. Built on a high pediment, it has a sweeping view of a mountain landscape where flights of egrets wing by at eye level. The extensive garden plays host to a myriad of wet zone flora and fauna.
